What is CGPA (Cumulative GPA)?

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the measurement of a student's overall academic performance across all semesters of their educational program. While GPA usually refers to the average for a single term, CGPA tracks your progress from your very first class to your graduation day.

Maintaining a strong CGPA is crucial for various milestones, including qualifying for honors (like Cum Laude), applying for graduate school, or securing competitive internships and job placements. Our CGPA Calculator simplifies the process of tracking your long-term academic health.

How to Calculate CGPA

CGPA is calculated by taking the sum of the quality points (GPA × Credits) for all semesters and dividing by the total number of credits attempted throughout the entire program.

CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) / Σ Total Credits

Example:
Semester 1: 3.50 GPA with 15 credits = 52.5 points
Semester 2: 3.80 GPA with 18 credits = 68.4 points
Total: 120.9 points / 33 credits = 3.66 CGPA

CGPA Planning & Projections

As you progress through your degree, your CGPA becomes more "stable" or harder to change. This is known as the "credit heavy" effect. A freshman's CGPA can swing wildly after one bad semester, while a senior's CGPA might only move by a fraction of a point even with straight As.

Our tool's CGPA Planning feature helps you combat this uncertainty. By entering your current standing and your goal, you can find out exactly what GPA you need to average in your remaining semesters to graduate with your desired honors or meeting a minimum requirement for grad school.

Tracking Progress by Semester

It is recommended to update your CGPA tracker at the end of every semester. This allows you to:

  • Identify Trends: Are your grades improving (upward trend) or declining? Employers often look for upward trends even if the starting CGPA was low.
  • Adjust Course Loads: If your CGPA is dipping, you might consider taking a lighter credit load the following semester to focus on core subjects.
  • Scholarship Maintenance: Many scholarships require a minimum CGPA (often 3.0 or 3.5) to be maintained annually.

CGPA vs. GPA: Key Differences

GPA (Term)

Measures performance in a single semester or term. It is a "snapshot" of your recent effort and mastery of specific current subjects.

CGPA (Cumulative)

Measures total performance across the entire duration of your course. It is the "big picture" of your academic consistency over years.
